David Olusoga: A Gun Through Time
From:19-04-2026
To:19-04-2026
+ More Info +

Have you ever considered how a single weapon could change the course of history? What stories lie behind the guns that shaped empires, wars, and even criminal underworlds? How did these firearms influence not just battles, but entire societies?

Known for his acclaimed documentaries Black and British: A Forgotten History and A House Through Time, as well has his appearance on Celebrity Traitors, David Olusoga offers remarkable storytelling in this powerful, unexpected and enlightening social narrative.

Join David as he uncovers the story of four firearms that changed the world and the lives of our ancestors.

The Thompson sub-machine gun was the wonder weapon that was supposed to end to the slaughter of the First World War. But in the hands of the gangsters of Prohibition-era America it became the infamous ‘Tommy Gun’.

The Maxim gun enabled Europeans to conquer Africa in the 1890s, but 20 years later it became one of the biggest killers in European history when deployed on the Western Front. It is still being used to considerable effect on the battlefields of Ukraine.

The Brown Bess flintlock musket, standard issue to the British Army from the early 18th to mid-19th century, was famously used in conflicts from the American War of Independence to Waterloo, symbolising the height of British imperial military power.

The Lee Enfield rifle was woven into the lives of two generations of our ancestors. With 17 million of them produced it was the weapon the British Army took to war in 1914 and 1939.

See these legendary firearms up close on stage and delve into their mind-bending hidden social histories. You’ll also have the chance ask David your own questions about any historical topic.

To:16-05-2026

Following seven West End seasons, a record-breaking UK and Ireland tour and 30 productions across the globe, the stage phenomenon 2:22: A Ghost Story now comes to Leeds.

Winner of Best New Play at the WhatsOnStage Awards, this edge-of-your-seat, supernatural thriller is written by Danny Robins, creator of the hit BBC podcasts Uncanny and The Battersea Poltergeist. It has featured a host of acclaimed star performances (including Lily Allen, Cheryl, Stacey Dooley, Tom Felton, Jake Wood, and James Buckley). It’s a brilliantly funny and adrenaline-filled night where secrets emerge and ghosts may or may not appear… What do you believe? And do you dare discover the truth?

“There’s something in our house. I hear it every night, at the same time.”

Jenny believes her new home is haunted, but her husband Sam isn’t having any of it. They argue with their first dinner guests, old friend Lauren and new partner Ben. Can the dead really walk again?

Belief and scepticism clash, but something feels strange and frightening, and that something is getting closer, so they’re going to stay up… until 2:22… and then they’ll know.

Star of The Celebrity Traitors, Taskmaster and Ted Lasso, Nick Mohammed returns as his critically acclaimed alter-ego Mr. Swallow in the ‘deliriously enjoyable’ (5 Stars, Guardian) Show Pony – now with even more tour dates added!

Mr. Swallow has recently been seen making everyone laugh in Amazon Prime’s hit show Last One Laughing, as well as appearing on numerous episodes of Channel 4’s 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown. He made his BBC debut at the 2024 BAFTA Film Awards with – frankly – terrifying results, a lot of which is discussed in Show Pony for therapeutic reasons.

Show Pony has been described by Mr. Swallow as “payback for everyone who didn’t come to the last tour” and “my most personal/libellous show to date” and will cover everything from not having his own sitcom to not having his own sitcom… and everything in between (critical race theory). As per – expect magic, music and a whole load of brand-new mistakes.

Built in 1878, reportedly following an off-the-cuff remark by Prince Albert that Leeds needed a good theatre as “nothing was more calculated to promote culture and raise the tone of the people”, Leeds Grand Theatre, or the ‘Grand Old Lady of Leeds’ (as she is fondly known), is the most magnificent of leading ladies.

Dressed head to toe in her finest Victorian velvet, gold leaf and ornate plasterwork, and crowned with a Waterford Crystal chandelier boasting 6389 crystals, she has welcomed the very best actors and entertainers to her (notoriously steep) stage since the directors of the company gathered the workforce in the orchestra pit on 28 May 1878 to raise a mug of beer, meat pie and three cheers to her success!

Like every titular character she has not been without her troubles, including a planned demolition in 1969 and a multi-million pound restoration of her roof in 2016. But thanks to the backing and financial investment of Leeds City Council, Heritage Lottery Fund and Arts Council England, she is now the magnificent home to all types of performances (and several ghosts), including resident companies Opera North and Northern Ballet, the best of the West End and other touring productions, including world premieres of Gary Barlow and Tim Firth’s, The Girls (2015), and Kay Mellor’s Fat Friends The Musical (2017) and Band of Gold (2019), plus world-famous music and stand-up.

Grand by name, Grand by nature.
