The Young Vic is a London theatre, located near the South Bank, on the Cut. Young Vic was originally a theatre company established as a project by The Old Vic Theatre School, who had the intention of performing classic plays for young audiences aged between nine and fifteen. The Young Vic as we know it today is an independent theatre that produces a variety of different works.

The abolishment of the Young Vic theatre company occurred in 1948, and it was not re-established until 1970 when the current building was opened. The venue was created by Frank Dunlop from breeze block, with the original construction aimed to last for five years, but it has since been made permanent. The theatre opened with a National Theatre production of Moliere’s The Cheats Of Scapin, starring Jim Dale. The Young Vic remained a part of the National Theatre until it became its own independent body in 1974.

The Young Vic has since gained a stellar reputation amongst the theatrical community. Many well-known theatre actors have performed there, including Ian Charleson, Vanessa Redgrave, Helen Mirren, Judi Dench, Timothy Dalton, John Malkovich and Michael Sheen to name but a few!

Since its separation from the National Theatre, the Young Vic continues to produce a programme largely constituted by classic plays, but aims to transform them into ground-breaking modern productions. It has won numerous awards for its innovative spirit and has an exceptionally renowned reputation considering its intimate main space of 420 seats.
