The Torch Theatre was established in 1977 and is one of only three building-based producing theatres in Wales alongside Cardiff’s Sherman Cymru and Clwyd Theatr Cymru.

The initial concept was a small community enterprise linked with a Further Education Centre in the adjacent building but due to the venue’s instant popularity, expansion became inevitable and it very quickly became a much larger project.

The theatre was designed by local architect, Monty Minter with one main auditorium of 297 seats at a cost of £500,000.

In 2006 the theatre commenced a £5million redevelopment, which was completed in 2008 with two performances spaces including the Main Theatre and a new 102 seat Studio Theatre. The new Torch also houses a gallery, café and state of the art digital cinema technology with 3D capabilities.

The Torch Theatre Company’s first in-house production was Alan Ayckbourn’s Relatively Speaking in November 1977. The producing arm of the theatre has since gone on to stage a further 167 productions, including shows that have toured internationally and performed at the Edinburgh Festival.

The Torch Theatre now offers over 900 shows, films, art exhibitions and live broadcasts annually to audiences in excess of 70,000.

The Torch Theatre is Pembrokeshire’s only professional theatre venue and arts complex, funded principally by the Arts Council of Wales and Pembrokeshire County Council.
