The Garrick Theatre is named after renowned stage actor, producer and theatre manager David Garrick. The venue is so ingrained in the history of the West End that it boasts a Grade II listing. The theatre was financed by W.S. Gilbert, a prolific playwright especially known for his Gilbert and Sullivan comedies. Opening in 1889, the Garrick’s early years specialised in melodrama, before increasingly moving to comedies.Originally an 800-seat venue on 4 levels, the Gallery is no longer used, making for a more compact seating plan of 700 seats across three levels. This is not the only adjustment in the theatre’s history as the original design by Walter Emden and C.J Phillips had to be changed on discovering an underground river whilst it was being built! The Garrick Theatre was beautifully refurbished in 2017, and has been one of five playhouses owned by Nimax Theatres since 2005. Due to the theatre’s listed status, the refurbishment went to great lengths to maintain the original features which give the venue its undeniable charm.
