The Donmar Warehouse is widely recognised as being one of the world’s best producing theatres. Nestled into Covent Garden at the heart of the West End, this relatively young theatre has won over 100 awards since its establishment in 1977. It is an intimate theatre with a unique auditorium layout which has 251 seats and 20 standing places available for its audiences. The theatre was founded by Donald Albery, who took the first three letters of his name and his wife’s middle name to create the name for the venue. The warehouse had previously been a store room for breweries, a film studio and a banana-ripening room for the market. The Albery family originally converted the space into a private rehearsal studio before 1977, when the Royal Shakespeare Company helped it to be founded as a theatre. The venue acted as the premier stage for RSC productions, hosting many acclaimed shows which later transferred to larger London theatres. Since its establishment as an independent producing house in 1992, the Donmar Warehouse has been seen as one of the top venues for intimate theatre. Under the artistic leadership of well-renowned names such as Sam Mendes, Michael Grandage and Josie Rourke, the venue has put on some of the country’s finest productions of new writing, contemporary revivals of classics, international drama and bespoke musical theatre.
