Directly above Tottenham Court Road underground station, the Dominion Theatre holds a prime position in Soho. Currently run by the Nederlander Organisation, the Grade II listed building has a diverse and colourful history, having previously acted as a cinema, variety hall and music venue.

Many of the biggest names in theatre have featured in shows at the theatre, including Judy Garland, Charlie Chaplin and Elizabeth Taylor. The Dominion Theatre can also consider its reputation as a popular music venue as part of its acclaimed history. During the 1980s, the theatre played host to huge artists such as Dolly Parton, Bon Jovi, David Bowie and Sinead O’Connor.

The theatre recently received a renovation worth 6 million pounds, with a lot of work being done to the outside façade, including the installation of exterior lights to make the building stand out at night. A new studio space for rehearsals and functions was also installed above the main foyer. Despite these new renovations, the theatre has kept its original light fittings and art deco plastering from its opening in 1929.

The Dominion Theatre has famously been the home of We Will Rock You, and had a statue depicting Freddie Mercury above its entrance for the duration of the show’s successful run. Originally scheduled to begin in 2002 and end in 2006, the show’s popularity led to an eight-year extension into 2014. The theatre has also played host to talented hopefuls auditioning for Britain’s Got Talent.

The Dominion Theatre has recently been home to the stage adaptation of An American In Paris and the musical hit Bat Out Of Hell, based on Meatloaf’s catalogue of popular songs.
