Theatre Of The Month > New Wimbledon Theatre
1 January 2017
Having stood proudly on Wimbledon’s Broadway since 1910, Wimbledon Theatre (as it was known then) has gone from strength to strength and garnered a glittering reputation as one of the premier theatrical venues in South London and the Home Counties.
The Grade II listed building consists of a beautiful Edwardian auditorium decorated in both Georgian and Italian renaissance styles across three levels with over 1,600 seats, making it one of the largest theatres in London. We play host to touring productions of musicals, ballet and operas as well as our annual pantomime each Christmas.
New Wimbledon Theatre has had a glittering history of previous star performers including Marlene Dietrich, Laurel and Hardy, Dirk Bogarde and Gracie Fields as well as boasting world premieres of such famous productions as Lionel Bart’s Oliver! and Half a Sixpence which starred Tommy Steele. In 2008 it was chosen as the venue for HRH The Price of Wales’ 60th Birthday Gala We are Most Amused which saw Robin Williams, John Cleese and Joan Rivers on our stage and joined by a host of home-grown and international talent in aid of The Princes Trust.
In addition to the main house the New Wimbledon Studio was founded in 1994. It’s a black box theatre formed from a ballroom where legend has it Fred and Adele Astaire once danced. The studio is programmed locally to reflect our local community. We have comedy nights, children’s theatre, local amateur groups and workshops that complement our main house programme.
The theatre became part of the international powerhouse the Ambassadors Theatre Group in 2003 when ‘New’ was added to its name.
Outreach and Engagement
2017 is an exciting year for learning at New Wimbledon Theatre, we have launched a new programme of classes - from Verona’s Musical Balloon Band (a series of interactive music and movement classes for ages 6 months to 6 years designed to stimulate and help development in speech, coordination and motor skills) and our Lunchtime Choir (open to all ages every Monday) to our Musical Theatre Workshops for the over 50s and Adult Acting Classes. There is plenty happening and we look forward to seeing many new faces to the theatre enjoying these classes. We’ve opened up the theatre during the day to the community as it’s our way of connecting with our audience a little bit more.
In addition to our in-house classes and workshops our Creative Learning department produce show-related workshops for schools which are designed to enrich students’ visits to New Wimbledon Theatre, this year’s classes include; Joseph & His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, Evita and Understanding Drama: School Masterclasses.
For the first time at New Wimbledon Theatre we will be producing Bugsy Malone as part of Stage Experience - a two week intensive musical theatre experience for ages 11 - 18. This is a unique chance to work with theatre professionals and perform on one of London’s most historic stages. Auditions for this unique experience take place during May ’17 half-term.
We are just about to finish the run of our annual pantomime. This year Arlene Phillips is making her pantomime debut with us as Fairy Bowbells in Dick Whittington which Time Out said was ‘big, bright, loud and…very funny. A proper family show.’ We also welcomed back to New Wimbledon Theatre the best dame in the business Matthew Kelly and the side-splittingly hilarious Tim Vine. Dick Whittington is with us until Sunday 15 January.
Joe McElderry (receiving rave reviews) stars in Joseph and His Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and John Partridge - fresh from appearing on our stage in Chicago - will star in a brand new production of La Cage Aux Folles. Thoroughly Modern Millie starring this year’s Strictly Come Dancing winner Joanne Clifton, West End smash hit and winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Musical Sunny Afternoon and the critically lauded The Red Shoes by Matthew Bourne’s New Adventures are just some of the top shows coming to New Wimbledon Theatre in 2017.
