“Three disasters. Two world wars, one bloody big depression. And every time, the band play on.”

It’s 1994 and the tight-knit mining community of Grimley, Yorkshire, are fighting to keep their colliery open. Meanwhile, revered band leader, Danny, battles to keep his dispirited band of brass-playing miners together with the dream of qualifying for the National Championships at London’s Albert Hall. When the uncertainty around the pit’s future becomes too much for the band members, loyalty is tested, pressure mounts and the community begins to break apart. With their whole way of life at stake, can the band find a way to play on?

Based on the smash-hit film, Brassed Off is a much-loved modern classic, full of grit, heart and northern humour. This production will feature live music from local brass bands to deliver a soul-stirring theatrical experience.

The Hound of the Baskervilles has gripped imaginations since it first appeared in print in 1901. This West End hit adaptation from famed physical comedy theatremakers Peeplolykus takes all the familiar elements of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s classic tale through an exhilarating ride of ridiculously funny performances, witty dialogue and buckets of chaos. Two lads. Twelve hours. One million pounds. On the wet West Cumbrian coast, James and Kamran have been mates for more than a decade. At seventeen, the world should be theirs but Workington’s a ghost town – an unemployment blackspot where lasses drink Bacardi by the pint and boys don’t cry.

When James discovers he is heir to a single mile of the British railway system, the lads are forced on a town-wide treasure hunt where annihilated aunties, Snakebite-drenched drag queens and a zombie Princess Diana lay in wait. But who rightfully owns the mile of steel? Why is Kamran in such a strop? And what really happens in the pub down by the docks?

In a town once rich with coal seams and ore, with community and carnivals, with sea air and ale, James and Kamran are fed up with feeling different – tonight they’re painting the town technicolour and asking what it means to be a man in a play about first loves, forging identities and the wild, wild hearts of teenage boys.

Theatre by the Lake opened in 1999. It is set a short stroll from Derwentwater on the edge of the bustling town of Keswick, amid the magnificent western fells of the Lake District. Theatre by the Lake is a producing theatre with regional and national impact, building upon the rich cultural heritage created in and inspired by the Lake District. From its unique rural location, Theatre by the Lake produces excellent, ambitious and inspiring theatre for its audiences and is a creative hub through which it engages with the communities of, and visitors to, Cumbria.

Born out of Century Theatre’s travelling Blue Box, it was willed into existence by passionate theatre lovers who wanted a permanent home for theatre in Keswick. Theatre by the Lake was the first theatre to be built with the help of the National Lottery and is the only year-round producing theatre in Cumbria. It has two stages, a 400-seat Main House and 100-seat Studio, and presents its own productions of classic, modern and new plays throughout the year serving a loyal all-year-round audience of residents and visitors to the region.
