Albany Theatre is an arts and culture centre in Deptford, South-East London. The site’s main auditorium doubles up as a 300-seat venue for plays, and a 500-seat venue for music events. It also contains two intimate studio theatres, a café for spoken word performances and several function rooms.

The Albany (as it is known to local residents) began in the 1970s when touring theatre company ‘The Combination’ made the building home. They started an organisation with the intention of supporting the local community through artistic ventures, including performances and workshops. During this time, it also hosted the major music events called Rock Against Racism which featured popular music bands, including Dire Straits.

Following a fire in 1978, the original building was destroyed. The new and current building was built in four years, and was officially opened by Princess Diana in 1982. During this era of the venue’s history, The Albany hosted more musicians such as Elvis Costello and Squeeze.

In current times, The Albany is home to many artistic companies, and continues to provide an eclectic programme of spoken word, live music, club nights, theatre and children’s shows. It also continues to advance its artistic programme with a focus on supporting the local community, especially getting elderly people involved with theatre.
