Tara Theatre is an intimate venue in Earlsfield, South-West London. The theatre company was founded in commemoration of Gurdip Singh Chaggar. The company wanted to present a blend of Eastern and Western cultures through their distinctive style of theatre. The company had their first production in 1977 at the Battersea Arts Centre with a performance of Sacrifice, a play by the Nobel Prize-winning poet Rabindranath. In September 1983, Tara purchased their current theatre site and has acted as their in-house production base ever since. In 2016, Sadiq Khan (the Mayor of London) officially opened this address as the UK’s first multicultural theatre – it had been renovated to create the new Tara Theatre. The Tara Theatre are also acknowledged as being one of the foremost multicultural theatre companies in Britain. The term ‘Tara’ is also of importance to the theatre and its company. The name was chosen as the name, which crosses over several languages, aligns with Tara’s mission: in Urdu, the word means ‘star’; in Buddhism, Tara is the Goddess of Love and Art; and in Irish culture, the Hill of Tara is the ancient seat of power. The combination of these definitions come together to embody Tara’s mission: to empower the stars of their company through their art and message of love across cultures. Tara Theatre is an intimate venue of 100 seats, and aims to make imaginative theatre through its unique connections across cultures. The venue presents a number of shows which uphold this intention, and hope to inspire you to carry it with you long after you’ve seen their performances.
