Stag Community Arts Theatre is a multi-purpose venue in Sevenoaks, Kent. It contains a theatre and two digital cinema screens, hosting a multitude of films and performances for all ages. The venue is proud to welcome over 250,000 people each year through its doors. The venue, known as ‘The Stag’ to local residents, was originally constructed as the Majestic Cinema and opened in 1936. During the next three decades, the venue was one of the most popular in the area and seated larger audiences of up to 1360 people. When the 1980s came, the cinema suffered a dramatic decrease in visitor numbers and was eventually offered as a venue to a local theatre group. The Stag experienced a short closure between the late 1980s and early 1990s. However, in 2008, the local council made the bold move (for a small populated town) to rejuvenate the building and transform it into an arts centre for the community. The venue underwent a major £3 million refurbishment. This saw a great rise in audiences coming to watch films and see the variety of performances that the venue has to offer. The Stag Community Arts Theatre that we know today is run by volunteers and presents a programme of entertainment that aims to cater for all ages and tastes.
