King’s Theatre Glasgow is one of Scotland’s major theatres. It was designed by the famous theatre architect, Frank Matcham, and opened in 1904. The venue functions primarily as a receiving house, which hosts touring companies across the year. King’s Theatre presents a varied programme of dramas, comedies, musicals, dance and circus.

The theatre opened in 1904 and was well-received by the residents of Glasgow and Scotland. It wasn’t until the 1930s however that it gained a top-class reputation. This came about from the idea of A. Stewart Cruikshank to host variety show performances during the summer, when normally the theatre would close due to the exodus of city residents to seaside holiday resorts. This change was hugely successful, selling out almost every night, and continued past the summer for a record-breaking 31 week run.

Since then, the King’s Theatre has hosted a variety of performances, including ballet, drama and musical plays. It has also seen some of the greatest names in theatre grace its stage, such as Laurence Olivier, Sarah Bernhardt and Katherine Hepburn. In 2008, a restoration was performed on the building to improve the interior and seating. It continues to host some of the finest touring shows in the country and maintains an eclectic programme for its audiences.
