The Duchess Theatre is one of the West End’s most intimate theatres. With a 494-seat auditorium over two tiers and Theatreland’s smallest Proscenium Arch space, it comes as no surprise that this intimate venue was previously well known for its one-man shows. The theatre opened in 1929 with a show called Tunnel Trench and one year later infamously hosted the shortest run in West End history when the Intimate Revue closed without completing its first performance. Despite this it has also numerous long-running productions including Noël Coward’s Blithe Spirit, which completed a run of 1,997 performances. The theatre has a unique design by Ewen Barr as the stalls are built below street level to avoid the structure blocking out light to the windows of surrounding buildings. Although the theatre remains much as it was when it opened, there was a large interior decoration scheme carried out in 1934.The Duchess Theatre is now one of five London theatres owned by the Nimax Theatre Group and is famously associated with the hilarious and Olivier Award-winning show, The Play That Goes Wrong.
